Just a 30-minute taxi ride south of Da Nang in central Vietnam, Hoi An's main attraction is its bustling Ancient Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fairly well-preserved trading port architecture from the 15th century onward now host shops, bars, and courtyard restaurants catering to the masses of mostly Vietnamese tourists who come here to holiday. The old town really comes alive when night falls and people come out in droves to eat at the riverside, take a boat cruise, or wander charming lantern-lit avenues in the cool of evening.
With its small town atmosphere, don't expect to find any openly gay venues flying a rainbow flag (although that may come soon given the rapidly expanding conversation about homosexuality throughout Vietnam). But, there are plenty of quality businesses being run by young, gay entrepreneurs where you can spend your pink holiday dollars. Apps like Jack'd and Grindr are constantly buzzing these days with messages from discreet local Utopians looking to meet up.
Gay-owned and managed bar down a lane way and away from the crowd. A 5-minute walk from Old Town. The bar is a great place to relax, in their garden or at the bar to meet other locals and tourists. Friendly, good looking staff. Good music and prices.
Gay men welcomed at this healthy relaxation and wellness spa, Inspired by the holistic teachings of Ayurveda, the oldest healing system originating in Asia. Their menu places great emphasis on balancing all areas of life and helping the body call upon its own energy to heal.
Hoi An's Ancient City area is a moving feast of street food vendors who set up shop at different times of day and sell their yummy specialties for a few hours until they run out. Look for crowds sitting on tiny plastic stools and observe what's being served. The bigger the crowd of eaters, the higher the yumminess probablity.

Even if you have never tried vegetarian food, Am Vegetarian will delight your palate with delicious salads, savory soups, and various rice and noodle dishes. Relax in their tranquil settings and be charmed by your friendly hosts. Diversity of all kinds is welcomed and embraced.

Foodie alert! Top notch examples of two of central Vietnam's unique specialties: banh beo (see pic below), chewy bite-sized pancakes of rice flour steamed in little ceramic dishes and topped with a savory mix of shrimp, pork, shallots, chiles, crunchies and fish sauce (order a bunch); and banh nam, rice and tapioca sheets heaped with banana-leaf steamed meat and more savory/spicy goodness. She's usually serving from 2-4pm. Thanks to our friends at EatingSaigon.com for this great tip!
Exit the landmark Japanese Covered Bridge from the "monkey altar" side, then take a right turn down the first small alley and Nu Eatery is on your left in a beautiful little Art Deco heritage house. Gay-owned, casual dining experience. Already famous for their great home-style Asian food with an American sensibility threaded through. Menu highlights include pork belly steamed buns, potato salad with pickled green beans and soft-boiled egg, pulled pork "Sloppy Joe" with carmelized onion on fresh baked brioche, and juicy sesame chicken with green mango and slaw. Intimate space filled with friendly international customers having good conversations over a glass of cold beer. Open air people watching perch on their 2/F balcony. Save room for their homemade desserts, including luscious lemongrass and subtle chile pepper ice creams. Ask owner, Troy, what's new in Hoi An. Reserve in advance as there is usually a line at the door and seating is limited.
