On May 18, 2006, Phuket Pride Inc., organizers of the upcoming 8th annual GLBT festival, met to elect a new Pride Committee. Attending this meeting were many key individuals in the Phuket Gay Community who came together to discuss the direction of the 2007 Pride celebration, to urge the community to get more involved, and to set dates for the next celebration.
Poonsak "Daeng" Sanchan, a Utopia Award winner and owner of Boat Bar, was elected Chair. To assist Khun Daeng with the planning and implementation of Phuket’s Pride Festival and Parade 2007, three individuals were elected Co-Chairs: Daniel See from Club One Seven, Ken Miller from CC Bloom’s Hotel , and Jira Nitnet from Once Upon a Time Restaurant.
The new executive committee proposed and decided that Phuket Pride’s mission statement would be “Creating a Stronger GLBT Community in Phuket.” The dates of next year’s Pride Celebration were moved to March 30, 31 and April 1, 2007. The reason for the move was to allow the business community to better market their hotels and to bring the Pride Celebration closer to the Songkran Festival which would bring together the two popular festivities.
It was also decided that Phuket Pride Inc. would continue their support of various organizations and foundations that have assisted the GLBT community in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The recipients of these funds will be Patong Hospital – MSM Project and Wat Phacha Temple. The committee also decided to commit funds to the strengthening of the GLBT communities by establishing a GLBT Scholarship Fund for those in the local community who need assistance in continuing their education.
