Patong Beach, Thailand -- The 2003 Phuket Gay Pride Festival came to a technicolor climax on Sunday, February 4, with a huge parade and street party that entertained tens of thousands of locals and visitors who turned out for the annual event, now in its 4th year. The weather was Phuket-perfect with blue skies, radiant sunshine, and cool sea breezes. Both sides of Patong Beach Road were packed with smiling faces from around the world and cameras were busy recording the spectacle for friends back home.
Festival organizers, the gay business community, local officials, and the police all did a fantastic job and are to be congratulated for a smoothly coordinated event that boosted Phuket's reputation as a fun-loving resort that shares its diversity and natural beauty with the rest of the world.
Festival activities included an all-gay cruise to tropical Khai Island organized by Connect, the popular beach volleyball competition hosted by Club Bamboo, a swimsuit competition sponsored by Aquarius Sauna, a bowling tournament, and entertainment from local stars and celebrity performers from Pattaya and Bangkok.
The parade featured a dozen large floats, including stand-outs from James Dean Bar, ICON, Boat Bar, Siam Palm, and marching contingents from most of the local gay businesses. Many marchers carried signs promoting AIDS awareness and anti-drug slogans.
Thai traditional costumes were the choice of many participants, with intricate likay and manora outfits standing out even amongst the many vibrant and creative outfits on display.
And, of course, it was a moment for everyone in the gay, lesbian, and transgender community to shine in their own personal way.
