CHINA - Dec 14, 2002

Chinese filmmaker Cui Zi'en, a professor at the Beijing Film Academy, has released a groundbreaking new film based on one of his own novels. His movie, Enter the Clowns, takes a fresh and frank look at the everyday lives of gays and transgenders in Beijing. Shot digitally, the film skillfully weaves these stories together with the immediacy of a reality television show. The characters are surprisingly frank as they lay bare the complications of their daily lives--their sexuality, their traumas and dreams--for Cui's camera. Enter the Clowns is a milestone in Chinese new cinema and a brave addition to the long history of homosexual subculture in China.
