Since 1998, Zhang Bei Chuan has been publishing a bi-monthly, home-made AIDS education pamphlet called Friend Exchange, targeting Chinese gays. Many Chinese are ignorant of the facts about HIV transmission and gay men, already leading deeply secret lives, are especially difficult to reach with life-saving information. Friend Exchange is unique in its frank discussion of homosexual life and safer sex advice for gays. With government support the magazine is quietly distributed through the mail and Zhang encourages readers to pass Friend Exchange on to others in their private circles.
