CHINATOWN
The Chinatown neighborhood is easy to navigate using our Utopia map:
"Hotel 1929 is not to be advised: barely friendly staff, tiny rooms, TV not facing beds, mean on hot water...The only good thing is their (expensive) restaurant.
Far too expensive for what it is, unless you are addicted to...chairs!" -- Brightheart, Apr 14, 2007
"I go to Singapore at least twice a year. I used to stay at The Inn all the time. The TVs never worked properly and the rooms are very small but it was fairly cheap and comfortable and friendly. Last time I was there the prices had nearly tripled and the rooms are still small and pokey with faulty tellies." -- chubbydaddy, Feb 21, 2008
"Stayed at The Inn... and shouldn't have: rude, rude, unobliging staff; charged rates higher than advertised and offered mouldy carpets and worn out towels in a damp, unclean, overpriced, tiny room; broken shower and bath taps... etc. The Inn - stay Out!" -- GWMAndre, Jan 21, 2007
"Stayed in 2 different rooms at The Inn. Sorry to say that I cannot recommend this place. The only things it had going for it was its excellent Chinatown location and a nice enough staff. However, the rooms were extremely small and the safes did not work in either room. In one room, the bathroom was so cramped that I could only sit on the toilet seat with my knees crashing against the shower stall. As a single occupant I was only entitled to only one towel--not one hand towel AND one bath towel--one towel period. And this was considered a 'Deluxe' room. I felt that the rooms were overpriced for what they offered." -- Dannyfr, Aug 18, 2007
"Expensive, but totally luxurious. Their rooms are a little small." -- chubbydaddy, Feb 21, 2008
"The Royal Peacock Hotel is basically across the street from Hotel 1929. I was pleased with the hotel. It's clean and the pricing is good. With taxes and service charges, it came to US$170 and that included breakfast. It was in the heart of Chinatown and only one block away from two of the most popular gay clubs in the city. The only downside is that the staff, while friendly, are not very helpful. When I arrived, a young lady needed help with her bags. When she asked for assistance, she was told they didn't have anyone to help her. They could have helped her or the staff sitting two feet away doing nothing. And later that night I needed an iron. I was told they woouldn't have access to one until in the morning. I found that hard to believe. And gay kids need an iron! The other issue was the room size. If I hadn't been alone, I would have felt cramped. The room was quite small and the bathroom... well lets just say I'm 6 ft, 180lbs (84kg) and I found it difficult to fit into the shower. But it was an adventure!! All in all, for the price and location, I'd go back (alone) in a heartbeat." -- JDfromUS, Sep 20, 2007
OTHER AREAS
"Gateway Hotel on Joo Chiat Rd in Geylang has friendly staff although it is a 15 minute walk to the MRT. The rooms are quite small, but clean, and very comfortable. At about S$80 it's really not too bad. However, their website says they have ample parking. In fact, they have only 8 car park spaces (4 spaces stacked on top of one another), and accessed through a narrow street. Further, their car park is not suitable for vans, SUV or bigger cars." -- ulpgp11, Jun 25, 2007
"I stayed at In Box guesthouse, email. Very clean, comfortable and hospitable guests. Too bad it has less than 10 rooms, but it was a good. Cheap at US$30 per night with attached bath and free tea/coffee.
Not all guests are gay, though it is gay friendly." -- rafflesdude, Jan 20, 2007
